Visiiri

Visiiri –
National ecosystem for Green ICT transition
1.4.2024–31.3.2026
(2 years)
European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)
Budget UTU: 165 000 €

The Visiiri project aims to promote the European Union’s dual transition, focusing in particular on boosting RDI cooperation between universities/research institutes and businesses in the field of Green ICT. The two main areas of Green ICT are climate change prevention and adaptation and the promotion of circular economy development. In terms of climate change prevention, energy efficiency is the key footprint measure in the ICT sector, and its handprint also has the potential to influence energy efficiency and emissions in the transport, logistics, construction and manufacturing sectors.

The ICT sector’s handprint impacts (ICT-enabled improvements in energy efficiency, emissions and environmental resilience) will be the subject of an R&I collaboration to create a model to assess the positive impacts of ICT on different sectors, such as energy production, agriculture, mobility, logistics, buildings and construction, and manufacturing and repair industries, using internationally accepted principles for impact assessment.

The project will create training content that will include information on the project results for self-learning. The self-learning material will include basics on green coding and code measurement, environmentally sustainable network technologies, data centre technology and other infrastructure, and sustainability in the ICT sector in general. This self-study material will provide those in the industry with a basic understanding of Green ICT.

The University of Turku will be responsible for the work package to identify and develop methods for measuring the environmental impact of the ICT sector with the aim of improving the energy efficiency of ICT systems. The focus will be on systematic measurement of power consumption of ICT system equipment and modelling the impact of software components. The activities in this work package build on the results of the MitViDi project.
