Environment OK – Environmentally sustainable software criteria for ICT procurement

The aim of the Environment OK project is to reduce the negative environmental impact of the software industry by developing and implementing environmentally friendly software procurement criteria. The main goal of the project is to ensure that these criteria are adopted in both public and private software procurement.

This goal will be aimed for by updating the software procurement criteria developed in the previous MitViDi project Motiva’s criteria bank and expanding them to cover new areas such as artificial intelligence, data-intensive systems, and positive handprint effects. The end result will be a comprehensive and practical set of criteria that supports environmentally responsible software procurement in Finland in both the public and private sectors. All development work is carried out in close cooperation with software companies and procurement experts.

The project provides concrete support to organizations by offering training, webinars, self-study materials, and assistance in preparing and implementing sustainable software procurement. With these resources, more organizations can utilize the criteria in their own procurements. In Southwest Finland, training is marketed specifically to public procurement units and companies in the health technology, maritime, food, and pharmaceutical industries.

Bringing energy efficiency and environmental responsibility to software markets

The project promotes energy efficiency and environmental considerations in software procurement and development. The actions target software procurement in both the private and public sectors, particularly in the provinces of Southwest Finland, Päijät-Häme, Kanta-Häme, and South Karelia.

The primary target group for the project is companies that develop and supply software and want to respond to their customers’ growing environmental requirements. The project will particularly benefit companies that are just starting out on the path to sustainable software development and want to develop competitive but more environmentally friendly solutions.

In addition, the project also supports organizations that purchase software, such as municipalities, government agencies, and private sector operators, where consideration of environmental impacts is a key part of decision-making.
