The Virtual Sea Trial project<\/a> will develop a unified and distributed virtual testing environment for ship systems. In the test environment, the shipbuilding ecosystem can test, validate, design, develop, and monitor things related to sea trials in cooperation and transparently. The virtual testing environment significantly reduces the cost risks associated with sea trials and the time needed to test ships at sea, which leads to direct emission reductions, enables the co-creation of innovations, and saves costs for the entire shipbuilding ecosystem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project utilizes and adapts co-simulation methods and processes into shipbuilding. With co-simulation, organizations in the shipbuilding ecosystem can test their products together already during the development phase. The project will also conceptualize a maritime digital asset management system and AI-supported information-retrieval system together with new usability and UI\/UX solutions to manage and monitor tacit and documented data related to the testing of ship systems more openly across organizational boundaries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virtual testing and commissioning solutions will improve the competitiveness of the Finnish shipbuilding ecosystem in the increasingly digitalized marine industry. The business feasibility of the concepts developed in the project will be assessed throughout the project. During the project, a roadmap is made, which includes an implementation plan for the developed concepts and a plan for the virtualization of sea trials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virtual Sea Trial project is a Business Finland<\/a> co-innovation<\/a> Meyer Necoleap<\/a> Veturi project. The project partners consist of Novia University of Applied Sciences<\/a>, University of Turku<\/a>, \u00c5bo Academi University<\/a>, and University of Oulu<\/a> as research organisations and Meyer Turku Oy<\/a>, Semantum Oy<\/a>, Cadmatic Oy<\/a>, Valmet Automation Oy<\/a>, Kongsberg Maritime Finland Oy<\/a>, W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 Oyj<\/a>, Steerprop Oy<\/a>, and Loisto Pro Oy<\/a> as industry partners. The overall budget of the project is 6 million euros. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

University of Turku participates in the project through two departments from the Faculty of Technology. Department of Computing coordinates the UTU project and provides expertise in human-machine-interfaces and information systems\u2019 development. Furthermore, it strengthens the consortium with its knowledge of IT services development and relevant vendoring practices. The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, supported by the new degree programme in automation, has excellence in model-based design and testing of automation systems for industrial processes, as well as simulation of these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
