This project aims to develop new monitoring, modeling and adjustment methods for high power laser welding of thick steel. At DFT, in close co-operation with LUT, sensor- and camera-level embedded parallel processing platforms are employed for very high speed capture and analysis of visual information from the weld interaction area. This data is analyzed and new algorithms are developed for monitoring of the welding process and weld quality, as well as for developing methods for welding process control. High speed visualization and image content analysis with minimal delay will offer better information on the fast transient phenomena present in the welding process and enable on-line closed-loop process control.
